70315: Clay’s Rumble Blade review

As well as the Ulimate Nexo Knight we got sent last week, we also got sent this set from the UK LEGO PR company. We have more sets coming that Ash and son will be reviewing in the coming weeks. This set was highly coveted at the end of last year as Mark Stafford showed off concept designs – which you can see in this month’s copy of Blocks mag that is out tomorrow. Here is my review of the £30 set that is basically 5 vehicles in one.

Set description

The Review

The box comes in the very striking Nexo Knight colours of blue and orange. The front has the set in action with the back showing all the play functions and shows the bikes and speeder attached from the base vehicle and the missiles firing. The instructions come with the same artwork on the front and contains 83 pages with the back taken up with the usual advertising – 9 pages for the new theme and then the parts list.

The build is split in 3 sections with each one having their required bricks in the numbered bag. Before I cover the build, the set comes with 5 minifigures: Clay Moorington, 2 Claybots, an Ash Attacker and a Scurrier. The minifigures really are great with new parts and printing. The highlight of the minifigures is the new Scurrier minifigure (a new mold) which requires you to attach his tail and horns. I bet the Entertainer probably don’t sell this theme due to their strict views on magic etc, but I think the bad guys are the best ones LEGO have done in a long time.

In bag one, besides Scurrier, we build Clay and Ash Attacker before we build Sword Speeder. This is basically a flying vehicle in the shape of a knife. It is very swooshable and a fun build to get you going in this set. The build for this section is done over 33 steps which for adults won’t present any challenges, but as it’s a unique design it gives you enough to make it interesting. I like how there is a place for Clay’s sword and shield.

We then move on to bag two where we build the two Clay Bots (complete with new arm elements) and the Sword Breaker Bikes. As you have two to build, I built them both at the same time as this build is a very repetitive section. The bikes are strange, the build is simple, and I find that the wheels don’t roll smoothly which diminishes the play feature.

The final bag has no minifigures in and is the base vehicle that allows the other vehicles to connect as well as the choice to act as a missile launcher. Again the build isn’t hard and the instructions makes it straightforward for LEGO builders of all age. It is again let down by the fact I found the wheels didn’t move freely. The bikes connect to the base with a blue clip on either side which means it doesn’t matter which side you connect to. You push a plate from the back that pushes both bikes so they disconnect. It is a fab feature. The Sword Speeder connects with two clips at the rear. I always thought LEGO classed this as an illegal connection but it works and makes for a solid connection, but easy enough not to slow play functions down.

Overall it is a decent retail set and at £29.99 you get value for money. With plenty of play features and some cool minifigures, the only thing that let it down was the lack of movement in the wheels which was a real shame. The set also comes with 3 unique shields to scan for the table game.
