Star Wars brick figurines

With the success of my brick-built Princess Leia, it was inevitable that I should do more… I say ‘should’ because when you get that kind of response to a creation and people are saying they can’t wait for the next one, you kind of feel a responsibility to fulfil their hopes on that. It’s a strange feeling and as a habitual MOCer, 2015 signified a shift in how I decide what to build, but I’ll get to that later.

Han IV 800

So I did Han, well mostly. I wasn’t happy with a couple of things and so there it sat incomplete in my eyes and I just never quite found the time. In the mean time, someone on Flickr had kindly asked if he could build a Han and Leia for a friend based on my images… No problem I said, just credit me if post photos. Turns out he has quite a following and displays on the French scene so they got blogged and went to ‘Fan de Briques’ in Bordeaux. This was all great for my Flickr account it it only served to make me realise that people were waiting. So finally, I got round to it and finished Han.

On the one hand, I don’t like being told what to build, or trying to think ‘what would my Flickr followers like to see’, after all, they follow me because of what I choose to build and how I build it. On the other hand, sometimes a little ‘follower pressure’ can help you get on with something you want to, but that you just let too much ‘life’ get in the way of. So with Han down, I quickly moved onto number three.

I’d wanted to do Chewie but the style of the figurines demands certain curved bricks to be used that I just don’t have enough of in Brown so the Wookiee will have to wait. Black though, got plenty of that and although I’d shelved Vader a few times because every idea I’d had for the mask has been a complete failure, I just started playing around and soon caught on to something. It looked a little bit weird but it did work. A few revisions and my New years eve/day… and the morning of the 2nd spent building and the whole thing was done.

Darth Vader IV a 800

I had a good feeling about this one as son as I’d done the shoulders. There were a number of problems with what should have been the simple flat brick cape down the back and part of it ended up being attached to the leg and not the cape at all.

Finally, the lightsaber. Doing the choke pose, I thought it should leave room to have the saber hanging from the belt. The design was a little big, but not too much for the style I thought, although I had to compromise the end by using the tap piece to attach it to the body but it was the best solution I could come up with, considering the bricks and space that surrounded it.

Lightsaber 800

So here they are. All three so far and as a series it’s going well. My thanks have to go to Bob DeQuatre for getting me into gear and motivating me to get on with it.

Han Vader Leia

So who next?.. Hmmmm, I’ll go check my 1×1 modified arches.

Hello, I'm Luc and I've been a Lego builder as long as I can remember. My Lego motto is 'From Imagination to creation' and I'm a hardcore MOCer through and through. That doesn't mean I don't like getting sets though, not only do they look great and give you exciting new bricks to build with but they teach you great techniques that you can use in your own creations.

When I'm not working on some overly-complex AFOL model, I'm playing and creating with my daughter, which makes sure that I never lose the fun, and it's this multi-faceted system of creativity and play that makes Lego the toy of all toys for me
